Jaco sits on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast in the province of Puntarenas, about a 90-minute drive from San José's international airport. That easy access, a long sandy beach and a laid-back surf-town atmosphere make Jaco surfing one of the most popular activities for visitors to the region.
The coastline around Jaco changes a lot within a short drive. Jaco Beach is an open beach break, Playa Hermosa to the south is known for more powerful waves, and areas toward Herradura and Los Sueños can be calmer on the right day. That variety is what makes the area such a good place to learn: on most days there is somewhere nearby that suits your level.
Surf Lessons in Jaco: What to Expect
Every lesson starts on the sand with a safety briefing. Your instructor explains currents, where the waves are breaking, how to fall safely and how to handle your board around other people. Ocean awareness comes first, because it is what keeps a first surf session fun.
Next comes technique. You'll practise lying on the board, paddling efficiently and the pop-up — the single movement from lying down to standing — until it starts to feel natural. In the water your instructor helps with wave selection and timing, tells you when to paddle and when to stand, and gives feedback after each ride. Most beginners start on white water close to shore and build from there.
Private Surf Lessons in Jaco — $140 per Person
Private surfing lessons in Jaco give you one-on-one attention for the whole session. Every correction, every wave and the pace of the lesson are built around you. They suit nervous beginners who want extra support, travellers who want to progress quickly in a short trip, and surfers with some experience who want to work on specific skills.
Group Surf Lessons in Jaco — $75 per Person
Group surfing lessons in Jaco are a social, budget-friendly way to learn. They are a great fit for friends, couples, families and groups visiting Jaco together. You share the instructor, cheer each other on and often learn a lot by watching the rest of the group ride.
Learn With Female Surf Instructors
All of our lessons are taught by female surf instructors. Many guests — especially women, families and first-time surfers — tell us they feel more relaxed learning in that environment. Your instructor stays with you in the water, keeps an eye on conditions and adapts the lesson to your comfort level.
What's Included in Your Lesson
Lessons include surf instruction and the equipment needed for the session, plus snacks, water and soda. Beer is available after surfing for adults. Transportation is available if you need it, and surfing photos can be arranged so you don't have to worry about bringing a camera into the ocean.
Surf Locations Chosen by Daily Conditions
We don't send every group to the same beach every day. Swell, tide and wind change constantly on the Pacific coast, so the lesson location is chosen according to that day's conditions. Lessons may take place at Jaco Beach or at nearby surf areas, picking the spot that gives your group and ability level the most appropriate waves.
Beginner Surfing in Jaco
You don't need any surfing experience to book a lesson. Being comfortable in the water helps, but you don't need to be an athlete — paddling is tiring at first, and your instructor will pace the session. Expect to fall plenty of times; that is part of learning.
Common first-lesson questions: What should I wear? A swimsuit that stays put, plus sunscreen applied before you arrive. Will I stand up? Many beginners do, but everyone progresses at their own pace. Is it safe? Your instructor chooses the location and stays with you, and ocean safety is covered before you paddle out. Read more in our guide to your first Jaco surfing lesson.
