Surfing always carries some risk. These habits help reduce it.
Before Entering the Water
- Watch the waves for a few minutes
- Look for rip currents (darker, calmer channels)
- Check for lightning or approaching storms
- Choose conditions that match your ability
- Never surf alone while learning
In the Water
- Leash attached to your back ankle
- Board beside you, never between you and a wave
- Fall flat and away from the board; never dive head-first
- Surface with arms covering your head
- Give other surfers space and follow etiquette
If Caught in a Current
- Stay calm and hold your board
- Paddle parallel to the shore, then back in
Sun and Health
- Reef-safe sunscreen and rash guard
- Drink water before and after
