Beginner Surfboards: What You'll Ride in Jaco

The board you learn on makes a huge difference. Here's how beginner surfboards work and why your instructor chooses the one you'll ride.

Soft-Top Surfboards

Soft-tops have a foam deck. They float well, are stable and are far more forgiving if you fall on them or they bump into you. Almost all beginners start on one.

Hard Boards

Fibreglass or epoxy boards are lighter and more responsive, but less forgiving. They're usually for surfers who can already catch and ride waves consistently.

Longboards

Longer boards (often around 8–9 feet for adult beginners) paddle faster, catch waves earlier and are more stable to stand on.

Shortboards

Short, narrow boards turn quickly but are hard to paddle and balance on. Starting on one usually means catching very few waves.

Volume

Volume is the board's overall floatation, usually measured in litres. More volume means easier paddling and more stability — exactly what beginners need.

Length and Width

Length helps with paddling and glide; width helps with balance. Beginner boards are long and wide.

Catching more waves means more practice standing up. A big, stable board gives you far more successful rides per session.

Matching Boards to Surfer Size and Experience

A heavier or taller surfer needs more volume; a child needs a smaller board they can manage. Returning surfers may move to a slightly smaller board.

Your instructor considers your size, fitness, water confidence and progress. As you improve, she may switch you to a different board during or between lessons.
