Jaco sits on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast in the province of Puntarenas, roughly a 90-minute drive from San José's international airport. That short transfer is a big reason Jaco became one of the country's best-known surf towns: you can land in the morning and be on the beach by the afternoon.
Why Jaco Works for Surfing
Jaco Beach is a long, open stretch of sand facing the Pacific. It picks up swell for much of the year, and because the coastline around it bends and changes, there is often somewhere nearby with waves that suit a given ability level. Playa Hermosa to the south is known for more powerful surf, while areas toward Herradura and Los Sueños can be calmer on the right day.
That variety matters more than any single "best beach." Good Jaco surfing lessons are built around choosing the right spot for the day's conditions and the group, rather than surfing the same place every day.
What a Lesson Looks Like
Most first lessons follow the same path: a short beach briefing on safety and ocean awareness, practising the pop-up on the sand, then time in the water learning to paddle, position the board and stand up on white-water waves. Prices and What's Included
- Private surf lesson — $140 per person
- Group surf lesson — $75 per person
Lessons are taught by female surf instructors. Snacks, water, soda and beer are included, transportation is available, and surfing photos can be arranged. Lessons run between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM, and cash and credit cards are accepted. A 20% deposit reserves your spot.
