Can You Learn to Surf in One Day?
Can you learn to surf in one day? What's realistic in a single surf lesson, what isn't, and how to get the most out of it.
Short answer: you can learn the basics in one day, and many people stand up in their first lesson. Becoming a surfer takes longer.
What's Realistic in One Lesson
- Understanding surf safety and currents
- Paddling and positioning on the board
- A smooth pop-up on land
- Riding whitewater toward the beach, often standing
What Takes Longer
- Paddling out past the whitewater
- Catching unbroken waves by yourself
- Choosing waves and turning
Get the Most From One Day
- Book with an instructor who chooses a suitable location.
- Arrive rested, hydrated and with sunscreen on.
- Practise the pop-up before you arrive.
- Go with a private lesson if you want maximum feedback.
- Ask for photos — surfing photos are available — so you can see your technique.
Then Go Again
If you enjoy it, a second session the next day builds on everything while it's fresh. See How Long Does It Take to Learn to Surf?
