Your First Surf Lesson in Jaco: Step by Step

What happens during your first surf lesson in Jaco, Costa Rica: 14 steps from arrival and board choice to catching whitewater, standing up and afterwards.

Never surfed before? Here's exactly what happens in a first lesson with us, from the moment you arrive to the drinks afterwards.

1. Arrival

We confirm the meeting point and time with you when you book. Transportation is available if you need it. Arrive with sunscreen already on and wearing your swimsuit or rash guard.

2. Meeting Your Instructor

Every lesson is taught by a female surf instructor. She'll ask about your swimming comfort, any previous board sports and how you're feeling — nerves are normal.

3. Choosing the Right Surfboard

Beginners use a long, wide, stable soft-top board that floats well and is forgiving when you fall. Your instructor picks the size for your height, weight and experience. More in our beginner surfboard guide.

4. Beach Instruction

On the sand you'll learn how to carry the board, attach the leash to your back ankle and lie in the right position.

5. Surf Safety

Before entering the water: where the waves are breaking, how to recognise currents, how to fall flat and protect your head, and how to keep control of your board around others. See the surf safety centre.

6. Understanding Today's Location

Your instructor explains why this spot was chosen today — swell, tide, wind and your level all matter. Locations change from day to day around Jaco Beach and nearby areas.

7. Learning to Paddle

Still on the sand, you'll practise the paddling stroke and body position. Details: how to paddle.

8. Pop-Up Technique

The key move: from lying down to standing in one motion. You'll repeat it on land until it feels natural. See how to stand up on a surfboard.

9. Entering the Water

You'll walk out with your board into waist-deep water, holding it beside you and turning the nose into oncoming whitewater.

10. Catching Whitewater Waves

Your instructor positions you, calls the wave and often gives a push to help you feel the timing. You'll start by riding lying down.

11. Standing Up

When you're ready, you pop up on the moving board. Many people stand in their first session — some take a little longer, which is completely normal.

12. Instructor Feedback

After each ride you get a quick tip: move back a little, look at the beach, stay low. Small fixes make a big difference. See common beginner mistakes.

13. Improving Your Technique

As you get comfortable, you'll work on timing your own paddle, a smoother pop-up and riding longer.

14. After the Lesson

Snacks, water and soda are included, with beer after surfing for adults. Surfing photos are available if you'd like to remember your first waves. Many students book a second session to build on what they learned — see how long it takes to learn.
