How Long Does It Take to Learn to Surf?
How long it takes to learn to surf: what most beginners achieve in one lesson, a week and a few months, and what speeds up progress.
"Learning to surf" means different things. Here's a realistic picture.
Typical Milestones
- First lesson: Many beginners stand up on whitewater waves. Some take longer, and that's normal.
- A few sessions: More consistent pop-ups, longer rides and better paddling.
- Weeks of regular surfing: Paddling out past the whitewater and starting to catch unbroken waves.
- Months to years: Turning, reading waves on your own, surfing different breaks.
Everyone progresses differently depending on fitness, water confidence, balance experience and how often they surf.
What Speeds It Up
- Surfing several days in a row rather than once a year
- Getting feedback from an instructor
- The right board (see choosing a beginner surfboard)
- Suitable conditions — too-big waves slow everyone down
- Practising the pop-up on land
Plan Your Trip Around It
If you're in Jacó for a week, try to surf early in your stay so you can book a second or third session. A private lesson gives the most feedback per session.
