Tides shape surfing in Jacó more than most visitors expect. This guide explains the basics. It does not show current tide data — for live, modelled conditions see the Jaco surf report.
What Tides Are
Tides are the regular rise and fall of sea level caused mainly by the Moon and Sun. Costa Rica's Pacific coast typically has two high and two low tides roughly every day, and the difference between them can be large.
Why Tides Matter for Surfing
Most surf around Jacó breaks over sandbanks. As the water gets deeper or shallower over those banks, waves break in different places and in different ways.
High Tide
Deeper water can make waves softer, break closer to shore, or stop breaking well on some banks. On bigger days, high tide can also push waves up the beach.
Low Tide
Shallower water can make waves break faster and more abruptly, sometimes closing out, and sandbanks can become exposed.
Incoming Tide
As the tide rises, conditions keep changing. On many beach breaks surfers look for a window during the incoming tide, but it depends on the spot and the day.
Outgoing Tide
As water drains off the banks, waves can become steeper and currents can strengthen near channels.
How Tides Interact With Swell and Wind
Tide never works alone. A long-period swell at low tide may be too powerful for beginners, while the same swell at mid tide may be fine somewhere else. Wind can clean up or ruin conditions at any stage of the tide.
