Surfing Etiquette for Beginners

Surf etiquette keeps everyone safe and keeps the water friendly. Beginners who know the basics are welcomed; those who don't can cause accidents.

The Key Rules

1. Priority goes to the surfer closest to the peak. If someone is already riding or about to catch the wave, it's theirs.
2. Don't drop in. Catching a wave in front of someone already riding it is the biggest mistake in surfing.
3. Don't snake. Paddling around someone to steal priority is poor form.
4. Paddle wide. When paddling out, go around the breaking area, not through the path of riders.
5. Hold on to your board. Never throw it away when a wave comes; it can hit someone behind you.
6. Apologise. Mistakes happen. A quick "sorry" goes a long way.

Beginner-Specific Tips

• Stay in the whitewater and away from experienced surfers at the peak.
• Don't paddle out into waves beyond your ability.
• Watch before you go in, and choose a less crowded area.

Respect the Place

Take your rubbish with you, respect local surfers and be friendly. In lessons, your instructor positions you where you won't conflict with other surfers.
