Jaco Beach (Playa Jacó) is the long sandy beach at the heart of Jacó, in the canton of Garabito, Puntarenas. It's one of the best-known surf beaches on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast and, for many visitors, the first place they try surfing.

What the Wave Is Like

Jaco Beach is a beach break: waves break over sand. Its size and shape change with swell, tide and wind, so it can be gentle one day and much stronger the next.

Beginners on smaller days, especially in the white water close to shore
Intermediate surfers when the swell picks up
South Jaco, the southern end of the beach, can offer different conditions from the main stretch

Safety at Jaco Beach

Rip currents are common on open beaches — learn to recognise them before you paddle out.
Avoid surfing alone on your first sessions.
Keep control of your board around swimmers and other surfers.

Jaco Beach runs along the town centre of Jacó, about 1.5 hours by road from San José airport — see getting to Jaco. Transportation to lessons is available.

We choose lesson locations according to each day's conditions. Jaco Beach is often a good option, but if it's too big or messy we may head somewhere nearby, such as Playa Hermosa on suitable days for more experienced surfers.
