What to Wear Surfing in Costa Rica
What to wear surfing in Costa Rica: swimsuits, rash guards, sun protection and whether you need a wetsuit in Jaco's warm water.
Costa Rica's Pacific water is warm year-round, so surfing clothes are simple. The main things to think about are staying covered and protecting yourself from the sun.
The Basics
- A swimsuit that stays put. Surfing involves falling and tumbling. Secure straps or a one-piece are more practical than loose styles; board shorts with a drawstring work well.
- A rash guard. A snug lycra top protects from sunburn and board rash on your chest and stomach.
- No wetsuit needed for most people in Jacó's warm water.
Sun Protection
- Reef-safe, water-resistant sunscreen applied before you arrive
- Lip balm with SPF
- A hat and sunglasses for before and after (not in the water)
What Not to Wear
- Jewellery and watches you'd hate to lose
- Loose clothing that fills with water
After Surfing
A towel, a dry change of clothes and sandals. Full list: What to Bring to a Surf Lesson.
Month-specific advice (rain jacket in the green season, extra sun protection in the dry season) is in each monthly guide.
